The illustrations feature a surreal, almost purgatory environment with a dark haired Alice wearing ragged clothing which more accurately portrays the real Alice on which Lewis Carroll based these stories. The animals both have a strange pattern on their bodies and clothing to create textures similar to the environment to convey that they are from this strange land.
